In 2016, Chevron's fully-owned subsidiary Unocal East China Sea, Ltd. (UECSL) began natural gas production from the Chuandongbei Gas Project in southwest China.
The Chuandongbei Gas Project is one of the largest and most complex onshore gas projects jointly developed by an international oil company and a national oil company in China, covering over 300 square kilometers in Sichuan Province and the Chongqing Municipality.
In October 2019, UECSL and PetroChina Company Limited (PetroChina) completed the successful transfer of Operatorship of Chuandongbei from UECSL to PetroChina. PetroChina continues to hold a 51 percent participating interest, with UESCL continuing to hold a 49 percent participating interest.
